Respiratory Complaints

Breathing disorders can include ailments such as asthma, bronchitis and pneumonia.

Bronchitis, typically characterized via uncomfortable bouts of coughing, is an inflammation of the mucous membranes of the larger and medium-sized airways that carry airflow from the trachea into the lungs and can be diagnosed as either acute or chronic.

Acute bronchitis is the development of a cough either with or without mucus expelled from the respiratory tract and often occurs during the course of an acute viral ailment such a cold or the flu. Viruses cause about 90% of acute bronchitis cases; bacteria generally accounts for the rest.

Chronic bronchitis is the development of a cough that lasts three or more months per year for a minimum of at least two years. It is often a result of recurrent injury to the airways via irritants that have been inhaled, such as cigarette smoke or other air pollutants.

Pneumonia is an inflammatory condition of the lungs and is commonly caused by infection (viral or bacterial), particular drugs and other conditions such as autoimmune diseases. Pneumonia primarily affects the microscopic air sacs in the lung called alveoli. Symptoms of pneumonia include coughing, chest pain, fever and difficulty breathing. Pneumonia should be taken seriously, as it can escalate to a severe level if left untreated or coupled with one or more ailments.
